History of BOTOX® Cosmetic

BOTOX® Cosmetic, a one-of-a-kind treatment, is the only FDA-approved prescription treatment for the temporary improvement in the appearance of moderate to severe frown lines between the brows in patients 18 to 65 years of age. In 2005 alone, almost 3.3 million BOTOX® Cosmetic treatments were performed – that is an increase of almost 16% from 2004. In fact, the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery ranked BOTOX® Cosmetic as the most popular of all surgical and nonsurgical cosmetic procedures.

How Lines and Wrinkles Can Form Between the Brows

Generally speaking, movement of the brow muscles causes the skin to crease. Repeated frowning, over time, creates lines and wrinkles because the skin becomes less elastic. Patients expressing interest in BOTOX® Cosmetic feel that their, "frown lines have grown strong enough so that even in a relaxed state, they seem fairly pronounced".

How BOTOX® Cosmetic works

BOTOX® Cosmetic is a purified protein that smoothes the muscles by blocking nerve impulses. With a few tiny injections, BOTOX® Cosmetic blocks the release of acetylcholine, the chemical that causes muscles to contract. With less movement, the skin surface gradually smoothes out and the lines begin to fade.

What to Expect From a BOTOX® Cosmetic Procedure

This simple 10-minute procedure consists of a few tiny injections applied by Dr. Golshani, a Los Angeles plastic surgeon. Results are typically seen in days and may continue to improve during the first week after treatment. As is the case with all other cosmetic procedures, results may vary.

One of the most commonly asked questions is whether there is anesthesia required. Although there is no anesthesia required, patients are often advised to numb the area with a cold pack or anesthetic cream prior to receiving any injections. The discomfort that patients experience is usually minimal and brief. When asked to compare the sensation, patients say that it feels like they received a bug bite. With respect to bruising, there is usually slight temporary bruising at the injection and most patients find it rather easy to cover up the area with makeup.

The most common side effects following the injection include headache, respiratory infection, flu syndrome, temporary eyelid droop, and nausea. Although serious allergic reactions have been rarely reported, any patients who think that they are having an allergic reaction or feel like they are experiencing other unusual symptoms (e.g., difficulty swallowing, speaking, or breathing) are advised to call Dr. Golshani immediately.

Results with No Downtime

The results speak for themselves. Below are some unretouched clinical photos taken at maximum frown before BOTOX® Cosmetic and after treatment with BOTOX® Cosmetic at Day 14.

Dr. Golshani's patients typically see improvement within days after the treatment. In fact, many patients continue to see improvement during the entire two weeks following the procedure. In clinical studies, the majority of people (82.5%) reported an improvement in the lines between their brows after a week (n=405). 89% of men and women surveyed rated the improvement in their appearance of brow lines as moderate to better after 1 month. What's more, with proper unit dosing, the effects of BOTOX® Cosmetic can last up to 4 months.

Many patients suggest that another factor that truly maintains their interest in BOTOX® is that they can look really great without looking like they have had any work done. As one patients notes, "You can still frown, smile, or look surprised without the wrinkles and creases between your brows". Another patient states, "I saw that I was able to smile and look natural and warm, and I'm very happy with that".

Botox® cosmetic can also be utilized to improve the crow's feet area, and the neck area.

New research and clinical experience also point to the effectiveness of Botox in the treatment of chronic migraine headaches. In fact, when applied correctly, Botox® can be used to decrease the recurrence or intensity of migraine headaches in many instances.

Excessive Sweating

Botox has also been proven effective in the treatment patients suffering from excess sweating in the palms and underarms. A single treatment with Botox can reduce regional sweating in the palms or underarms by up to 70% for several months.
