How Fraxel Laser Treatment Works

Fraxel Laser Treatment produces thousands of tiny columns of treatment, referred to as microthermal treatment zones, in your skin. Furthermore, for every microthermal zone the laser targets and treats intensively, it leaves the surrounding tissue unaffected and intact. This "fractional" treatment allows the skin to heal much faster than if the entire area were treated at once, using the body's natural healing process to create new, healthy tissue to replace skin imperfections.

How long is a Fraxel Treatment Plan? What can I expect?

One Fraxel session can treat the entire face and can be done in about 30 minutes. There is no oozing or crusting as a result of Fraxel treatments. Patients typically experience some redness or swelling after the procedures, but this usually goes away after a day or two.

Subsequent Sessions

Each Fraxel Laser Treatment usually treats 20% - 25% of the skin's surface. Thus, clinical studies suggest that a treatment regimen should entail between three to five sessions to achieve the maximum results. These sessions are usually spaced between two to four weeks apart. Depending upon your condition, you and Dr. Golshani may choose to space treatment sessions even farther apart. Results are both immediate and progressive. Optimal improvement, therefore, is usually visible in approximately two to three months.

Preparing for your Treatment

Fraxel Laser Treatment is performed in Dr. Daniel Golshani's Beverly Hills or West Hills office. The treatment area is cleansed prior to the procedure. Next, topical anesthesia is applied. OptiGuide Blue, an FDA certified watersoluble tint, is applied to the treatment area to highlight the contours of the skin. The colored tint is washed off after treatment.

What Happens After Treatment

You will experience a mild sunburn sensation for one to two hours after treatment. Swelling will vary depending upon your skin and typically resolves in two to three days. Your skin will have a pinkish tone for five to seven days, which is a sign that skin is healing deeply.

After treatment, you may apply make-up or shave. Many patients return to routine activities, including work and social obligations, the same day of treatment. Others may require a little more time. New epidermal skin develops immediately, within 24 hours. This process of skin repair involves bronzing (i.e., your skin will have a bronze appearance for 3 to 14 days); Flaking (i.e., your skin will naturally exfoliate as the reorganized skin replaces dead tissue); and Sunscreen (i.e., sunscreen must be used at least twice daily to protect your skin from sun exposure).

Over the following weeks and months, the body repairs the deeper dermal tissues that have been affected by Fraxel Laser Treatment, producing beneficial changes that continue to improve over the next 2 to 3 months.
