Liposuction

In our society, a fit and well-proportioned body is often considered a symbol of health and attractiveness. Many individuals, however, may be in great health and maintain a reasonable level of fitness and still have a body with disproportionate

contours because of localized fat deposits. These localized fat deposits, present in areas such as the upper arms, chest, abdomen, buttocks, hips, thighs, knees, calves and ankles may be a result of heredity or family traits rather than a lack of weight control or fitness.

Liposuction surgery is not intended as a substitute for a weight-loss or an appropriate exercise program. However, if you are troubled by excess fat deposits that do not respond to diet or exercise, liposuction surgery may be right for you. Generally speaking, liposuction slims and reshapes specific areas of the body by removing localized or regional excess fat deposits, improving your body contours and proportion, and enhancing your self-image and self-confidence.

My liposuction

Liposuction is a procedure requiring careful consideration of your specific concerns and the areas in which you desire improvement. An assessment of your skin tone and elasticity, as well as your fat density and distribution will determine appropriate techniques for your specific case.

Where do I begin?

A consultation with board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Daniel Golshani in one of his Los Angeles locations is the first step to learn how liposuction can improve your body's shape. Dr. Golshani's consultations are designed to fully educate potential patients. Consultations typically include a discussion of your goals, an evaluation of your current body shape, the options available to you for liposuction, the likely outcomes and potential risks and complications associated with the procedure, and the course of treatment that Dr. Golshani recommends for you.

Preparing for surgery

Daniel Golshani, M.D., F.A.C.S. will carefully explain the liposuction procedure you will undergo. Prior to your procedure, you will be given specific instructions regarding diagnostic testing, day of surgery procedures, postoperative care, and follow-up information. The use of a post-operative compression garment for a variable period will be addressed depending on your skin type. A massage, endermologie, or Velasmooth treatment regimen may be individually planned for you post-operatively. In addition, you will be asked to sign consent forms to assure Dr. Golshani that you fully understand the procedure that you will undergo and any potential risks or complications related to your procedure.

Procedure

During the procedure, patients will have anesthesia administered by a board-certified anesthesiologist. Liposuction surgery is performed on an outpatient basis, however, depending on each case, some patients will be required to stay at an overnight facility such as Serenity for the first night or two after surgery. Dr. Golshani usually uses the tumescent or super-wet techniques. These techniques are safe and reliable methods that can reduce post-operative bruising, swelling and pain. The tumescent technique uses large volumes of a dilute solution of lidocaine, a local anesthetic, in combination with epinephrine, which temporarily shrinks capillaries, the tiniest of blood vessels.

Moreover, Liposuction makes use of small stainless steel tubes, called cannulas. The cannula is connected to a suction pump and inserted through very small incisions. These incisions are so small that quite often, they do not require any stitches.

Finally, Tumescent liposuction is permanent because the doctor removes fat cells where localized fatty deposits exist. If you gain weight after the surgery, the fat goes to the fat cells that remain in your body.

Following surgery

Once your procedure is complete, a compression garment or elastic bandages may cover treatment areas. These assist to control swelling and compress the skin to your new body contours. Additionally, small temporary drains may be placed in existing incisions beneath the skin to remove any excess fluid. Before being released, you and an accompanying family member, friend, or caregiver will be given specific instructions that may include:
  • How to care for the surgical sit
  • Medications to apply or take orally to facilitate the healing process and reduce the potential for infection and bruising
  • Specific concerns to look for at the surgical site or in overall health
  • When to follow up with Dr. Golshani

Progress and Healing

Initial healing will include swelling and may include some numbness, and discomfort that can be controlled with medication. Your skin may look slightly bruised or discolored. These are all common conditions.

Dr. Golshani will provide specific postoperative instructions based on the technique and extent of your procedure. These will include instructions on the use of any compression garments, expected return to activity and appropriate care of incisions. Patients should follow all instructions carefully as this is essential to the success of your outcomes. In general, a return to light, normal activity is possible as soon as you feel ready and is encouraged as a prevention for blood clots and other potential complications.

Initial wound healing may take from 5 to 10 days, at which time any sutures will be removed. Healing will continue for several weeks as swelling continues to dissipate. Incision lines will improve over time. Continue to follow Dr. Golshani's instructions and attend all follow-up visits. Dr. Golshani will encourage you to control your weight, as significant weight gain can reverse your results. Ask Dr. Golshani about the 7/5 Diet Protocol™ or the Smart For Life ™ Diet before and after surgery.

Progress and Healing

It may take several months for swelling to fully dissipate. As it does, your new contours and enhanced self-image should continue to develop.

The fulfillment you feel from the initial results of liposuction should continue as long as you maintain your weight and practice a healthy lifestyle that includes eating well and getting regular physical activity. Following your liposuction procedure, your slimmer and better-proportioned body should more accurately reflect the healthy and active life that you lead.
