Post Bariatric Surgery Reconstruction

Many patients, after losing a significant amount of weight through dieting, LAP-BAND® surgery, or laparoscopic or open gastric bypass surgery, often experience improvements in their metabolism and may recover from chronic medical conditions such as high blood pressure and diabetes. However, they are usually surprised when their bodies don’t look the way they expected as this type of rapid weight loss can lead to increased skin laxity and a disproportioned body contour with loose, sagging skin in areas such as the face, neck, upper arms, breast, abdomen, buttocks, and thighs. Patients may also experience rashes and hygiene problems due to the excess skin.

Post-bariatric reconstructive surgery is a combination of several surgeries that remove the excess skin and fat remaining after dramatic weight loss. As described by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), the aim of post-bariatric surgery is to help patients feel as though they fit in their own skin after a gastric bypass treatment. Though the surgery is life-changing and gratifying to say the least, it is an extensive surgical procedure with a longer recovery and in many cases, visible scars. However, most patients feel the benefits of having a more proportionate body, and the gained self-confidence far outweighs any negative aspects for most patients.

Procedures Available for Post-Bariatric Surgery

Many Post-Bariatric surgeries include a total body lift, which could include the following procedures:
Lower Body Lift
Abdominoplasty or Tummy Tuck
Leg, Thigh & Buttock Lifts
Breast Lift
Upper Arm Lift
Many post-bariatric patients also lose fat and volume in their face, which can be improved with a face lift, neck lift and micro-fat grafting.

Where do I begin?

Dr. Daniel Golshani has a special interest and extensive experience in Post-Bariatric Plastic Surgery. When working with post-bariatric patients, he is aware that their skin is quite different from a non-bariatric patient and often requires a different surgical approach. During surgery, post-bariatric patients often show an increased skin laxity compared to the average population. Therefore, to achieve an optimal outcome, the post-bariatric surgeon needs to have the ability and experience to individualize each procedure based on his findings for each patient including their degree of skin laxity and recoil.

Because of this, it is important to schedule a consultation with Dr. Golshani in order to determine the appropriate techniques for your specific case including an assessment of your skin tone and elasticity. In addition, before post-bariatric surgery is performed, the patient is evaluated metabolically by Dr. Golshani to ensure that he, or she, has arrived at a metabolic plateau and is no longer in a catabolic state. This is to ensure that the patient has adequate wound healing capabilities for the healing that will follow any form of surgery.
