As a result of pregnancy, breast-feeding, weight fluctuations, aging, and gravity, women's breasts often lose their youthful appearance and firmness over time. For many, the loss of firmness and uplifted contours influences their self-image and feelings of confidence.
If firmness and a restoration of breast shape are important to you, then a breast lift (or mastopexy) may be right for you. Generally speaking, a breast lift raises and firms the breasts by removing excess skin and tightening the surrounding tissue to reshape and support the new breast contour. Many patients who have undergone breast lift surgery feel that their figure is rejuvenated and demonstrates a breast profile that is more youthful, uplifted, and firm.
Breast lift, or mastopexy, is surgery to uplift and improve the shape of a breast that:
A breast lift, appropriate for individuals who wish to improve the shape of their breasts, is often done in conjunction with breast implants.
A consultation with Dr. Daniel Golshani is your first step to learning how a breast lift can improve your breast contours. Dr. Golshani's consultations are designed to fully inform you about breast lift surgery in a positive and non-pressured environment and will include:
Breast lift, a highly individualized procedure, is achieved through many difference incision patterns and techniques. S. Daniel Golshani, M.D., F.A.C.S. will detemine which technique is most suited for your case based on:
In addition, there are many variations to this procedure, however, one of the most common is a pattern with three incisions:
As a result of these incisions, Dr. Golshani lifts and reshapes the underlying breast tissue to improve breast contours and firmness. Dr. Golshani also respositions the nipple and areola to a more natural and youthful height. If necessary, he also reduces enlarged areolas by excising skin at the perimeter. Finally, excess breast skin is also removed to compensate for a loss of elasticity.
Once your procedure is complete, Dr. Golshani will apply dressing or bandages to your incisions; you will also be expected to wear a support bra that will minimize swelling and support the breasts as they heal. Before being released after surgery, you and a caregiver will be given instructions about how to care for the breasts following your procedure; medications to apply or take orally to facilitate helaing and reduce the risk of infection; when to follow-up with Dr. Golshani.
Initially, healing will include swelling and discomfort at the incision sites. Although discomfort is common after surgery, it can be controlled with proper medication. A support bra will be recommended around the clock for the first two weeks following surgery. It is very important to clean the incision sites and apply ointment as directed by Dr. Golshani. A return to light, moderate activity is possible usually within a few days of surgery.
Initial wound healing typically takes 5 to 10 days, at which time any sutures will be removed. You will be ready to return to work and normal activity at this time, but may not engage in any heavy lifting or vigorous exercise.
Healing will continue for several weeks as swelling subsides and incision lines continue to improve. It is imperative to follow Dr. Golshani's instructions and attend all follow-up visits as scheduled.
